What happens during an EMDR session?
EMDR helps the brain process emotional information held in the nervous system from a traumatic event. The EMDR therapist helps their client navigate the healing process by becoming their partner on the journey to “free up” the troubling emotions so they can be processed in the normal way.
During an EMDR session, the therapist gently guides the client to the problem targeted for treatment. As related thoughts and feelings briefly surface, the client and therapist work together to change the eye movements that accompanied the event. When the previous eye movement patterns are changed, the emotions that had been connected to them are neutralized. In addition, the original event will be re-associated with healing thoughts and feelings, such as “I realize now it was not my fault.”
