What Happens in a Sex Therapy Session?
The first step is evaluating and assessing the problem or problems that are presented by the client. To begin, a sexual history that describes the client’s sexual experiences is taken. If a couple, each partner’s sexual history is taken separately (any information given to your sex therapist will remain strictly confidential).
The therapist analyzes the medical data, history, and issues or circumstances described by the client. This evaluation results in a diagnosis and a treatment plan. The treatment will vary, but it usually recommends specific exercises for each client or couple that are practiced in the privacy of their home. The goal of the exercises is to help the client acquire new sexual behaviors that will be more satisfying.
The at-home “sensate focus exercises” are designed to remove the pressure and worry about sexual performance. In subsequent sessions, the home exercises results are discussed and explored.
A sex therapist will provide information about male and female anatomy, and may provide read materials or educational videos to the client.
