What Is a Certified Sex Therapist?
The terms “sex therapy or “sex therapist” is not clearly defined in many states. There are self-appointed professionals who call themselves sex therapists, but they do not have the training and qualifications of a certified sex therapist. In addition to their education and background in psychology or medicine, therapists certified by the American Board of Sexology have extensive training and supervision, and have passed strict professional requirements in order to receive their certification.
A certified sex therapist is qualified to educate and guide clients to discover and resolve their sexual concerns. They work with clients in therapy sessions that do not involve sexual contact, or any kind of sexual activity or nudity with the therapist present. Certified Sex Therapists are obligated to conduct themselves in an ethical, professional manner at all times.
